Title: ‘The Use of Augmented Reality in English Language Teaching: An Innovative Educational Approach within the Framework of the European Erasmus+ ARIDLL Program’
by Angeliki Voreopoulou, 15th Primary School of Evosmos – Greece
Abstract: Augmented Reality (AR) has emerged as one of the most popular educational technologies in recent years, enhancing the learning process in both primary, secondary and tertiary education. AR overlays digital elements onto the real world, offering students unique opportunities for interactive and experiential learning, bridging the gap between the classroom and the real world. The activity “A New Student in Our School,” designed for 9–10 – year-old learners at A1 (CEFR) level in English, utilizes the MirageXR application to support language teaching through multisensory stimuli. Developed within the framework of the Erasmus+ KA220 program titled “Augmented Reality Instructional Design in Language Learning” (ARIDLL), this activity promotes 21st-century skills and aligns with the Greek curriculum. Children enhance their linguistic and cognitive abilities by comparing a virtual and a physical classroom while meeting their virtual new classmate. Simultaneously, they engage actively in collaboration and interaction with both their peers and the application’s content. AR’s capabilities boost student participation and motivation in the learning process.
The presentation provided a thorough demonstration of the AR activity’s steps and the possible final outcomes. Further suggestions for follow up activities were included.
