Title: Integrating Augmented Realityin creative story writing for English language learning
by Angeliki Voreopoulou and Antigoni Parmaxi
Abstract: Writing has often been considered as one of the most demanding skills to be learnt and taught in the English language learning classroom for various reasons including among others absence of adequate practice and lack of student motivation to engage in the process. Integrating Augmented Reality (AR) into writing instruction could alleviate these issues. The main purpose of this qualitative study is to explore the beliefs of 18 primary level students on the effectiveness of AR-supported storywriting instruction and its impact on their engagement while providing a detailed presentation of the design of the intervention. Students are encouraged to write a story based on the choices they make on a variety of AR 3D models representing the main features of their story. Students have to interact both with the AR application as well as with their peers in order to make the necessary decisions and develop their stories. Data collection involved a student questionnaire and teacher’s notes during the activity. The findings revealed increased student motivation, peer collaboration, and effective task completion, which in turn can highlight the pedagogical potential of AR-based instruction. Limitations of the study and further work recommendations are also explored.
