Title: AR in Language Learning: Learners’ and Teachers’ needs and user experiences
by Anke Berns, Alice Gruber, Tormod Aagaard
Abstract: As AR technology advances, its transformative potential in language learning contexts warrants exploration. Addressing this issue this study examines the needs and experiences of language learners and educators regarding the use of Augmented Reality (AR) applications in language teaching. AR activities were developed by an interdisciplinary team led by language educators and tested with a diverse cohort of educators and learners of different languages and proficiency levels in different countries. Systematically collected data from both groups assess user experience and pedagogical efficacy, contributing to an understanding of AR’s impact on language learning, learner engagement and support for teaching methodologies. The presentation will showcase a diverse range of AR activities designed for language learners, highlighting their application in real-world contexts and their effectiveness in promoting interactive and immersive learning. Additionally, practical insights will be provided to assist educators in the seamless integration of AR technologies into classroom settings. By disseminating the results of this study, we aim to facilitate informed discussions about good practices for implementing AR in language education, offering valuable guidance for educators and instructional designers. This research not only addresses the immediate instructional needs of language learners but also aims to enhance the overall quality and efficacy of language teaching through innovative technologies. Informed by collaboration and feedback from educators and learners, the study refines AR resources to meet the varied needs of the language learning community, promoting an enriched educational experience.
